marquard Charlie's choice of Steve Jordan would is a very logical replacement. I was involved with a recording session with Steve (He played on a session for a friend of mine, great blues guitarist). Steve was absolutely rock solid., and he never complicated anything. The beat was there exactly as it needed to be. That said, Charlie Watts was one of a kind. We'll have to hear Steve with the Stones, if that comes about.
I was talking with a friend recently about the magic of many bands being created by chemistry with their drummers.
As good as each of those drummers were, swap them around and the chemistry of their band disappears.
If there's any doubt about Ringo: George Martin had both Ringo and session drummer extraordinaire Steve Gadd (Steely Dan Aja solo) on the same session. George later said that he was surprised...that they put out equally good sound for the recording session. That's what it's about, after all.
